Who's Giving Up Bread? NOT ME!

Who’s Giving Up Bread? NOT ME!

(dedicated to my mom, 1939-November 2025)

How much bread do you eat in a given week? What is your favorite bread? I really like sourdough bread. I’m not talking about the sourdough bread that tastes like white bread. You bread people know what I’m talking about. My brother makes a sourdough rye bread, but I don’t really care for rye. I think it’s because I have a sensitivity to it. Pumpernickel was never a favorite either.  Some people give up bread, as they don’t believe it gives them any health benefits. Are you one of those people? When eating out and they bring a basket of bread, yes, I have to try it. When it’s fresh and warm, I cannot pass it up. I have never restricted my diet to no bread or even super low carbs. I do try to limit the amount of refined sugars I eat. My husband reminds me that potatoes and bread turn into sugar. It’s not the same as eating a candy bar or even my beloved ice cream.

When living in New Hampshire, we would buy When Pigs Fly sourdough bread. When we moved to Georgia and then to Nevada, it was not available to me in those states. I did find out that I could purchase it online and have it mailed to me. I didn’t do that, but searched for a sourdough near me that would satisfy my taste buds. I would check out farmers' markets and bakery areas at the local supermarkets in search of a “just right” sourdough. I never did find a sourdough bread I consistently felt like buying. I have paid $12.00 for a loaf of bread. What is the most you have paid for a loaf of bread?

How many of us grew up with “Wonder Bread”? You may remember the packaging. It was white with colored circles on it. I just looked up a package of Wonder Bread, and yes, it has the primary colors, red, yellow, and blue circles on it. The packaging has changed a bit. The circles are bigger as is their logo. We did not grow up with much bread. I don’t recall one time in my life ,growing up, when we had homemade bread fresh out of the oven. What I do remember is that almost daily, we had fresh tortillas off the cast-iron skillet. We were making wraps before wraps were a thing. My mom would roll bologna in a tortilla, peanut butter and jelly in a tortilla, and of course, the homemade beans, cooked in lard and refried, with lots of cheese, were put in the tortilla. We did have bread in the house, but again, we ate a tortilla with our breakfast, not toast.

There’s a bread that has become my all-time favorite, forever bread. I will never stop wanting it, seeking it out, or being filled and satisfied by it. Some people may consider it “wonder bread”, it’s actually “life giving” bread. It’s always available, but the cost is more than anyone could ever pay. The great news is that it’s been purchased for you, free to all who desire it. All we need to do is receive it, and take of it daily. If you ever hear of anyone saying they don’t eat bread, tell them how good this bread is and the benefits it will bring to the body, mind and spirit. My mom received this bread.

Here it is: Jesus said:

Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness (my ancestors ate the tortillas ), yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which ANYONE may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Many people thought this was a hard teaching and quit following Jesus. I find it very hard when I hear people say, “I don’t eat bread”. That’s a hard saying for me. I don’t walk away from bread made on this earth and surely never want to walk away from Jesus, our bread sent from heaven.

Please read John 6:42-71

My mom is still living; she took this life-giving bread and lives today. Her physical body is no longer here. If you read 2 Corinthians Chapter 5, you will see that even if she is absent from the body, she lives with the Lord. No more groaning, pain, or enduring what physical life brought.

“For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now, He who has prepared up for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.”

LOOK AT THAT A GUARNATEE!!

“So we are always confident. (ALWAYS CONFIDENT), KNOWING that while we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight.  We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

 2 Corinthians 5:1-8

I am confident my mom is in the presence of the Lord. She, just as well as you can be guaranteed of that. You must eat the life-giving bread, receive Jesus, and know He is who he said He is. God's loving kindness has provided for you and will continue to do so DAILY. Eat and be filled with God's Word.

I’m so happy for my mom and for her to be “HOME”. It’s only been a couple of weeks, and the incredible love poured out to our family brings comfort. The best comfort is KNOWING, BEING CONFIDENT she is living absent from this body and present with OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. I pray that you and your family may experience this Confidence.
